JP DRC Fighting Impunity

OverviewDRC Fighting Impunity Joint Programme

Following a decade of conflict, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) initiated a slow transition towards restoring peace and security, particularly in the hard-hit eastern provinces. Sexual violence committed during bouts of conflict was amply documented with findings showing that rape was often used as a strategy of war. Furthermore, sexual and gender-based violence was a common occurrence with offences carried out by military members and civilians due to a climate of impunity that protected perpetrators.
