The Ethiopia One UN Fund was established in 2011 as a funding mechanism for new resources pooled by donors to support underfunded portions of the One UN Programme, including gender empowerment, maternal health, and equitable development. The Fund seeks to strengthen the planning and coordination progress, align funding allocations to the needs of the UNDAF, and channel funds towards the highest priority needs of the country.

The work of the Ethiopia One UN Fund is possible thanks to the efforts of . These resources are pooled and channelled to participating organizations to promote joint action and multi-stakeholder partnerships, making a difference on the ground.
The One UN process in Ethiopia was initiated in 2008 to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the UN system in meeting international and national commitments. Implemented in a collaborative manner under the leadership of the Government of Ethiopia, One UN MPTF action was fully aligned with system-wide measures to improve coherence and harmonization of development investments in Ethiopia. Overall strategic objectives for the UN in Ethiopia were identified in high priority areas for achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), where the UN held a comparative advantage:
These flagship programmes were intended to be taken to scale, and each flagship joint programme was co-led by a member from a government ministry and UN organization.
Provided oversight for the Ethiopia One UN Fund and was co-chaired by the State Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and the UN Resident Coordinator. The committee provided strategic direction, assisted in the mobilization of resources for the One UN Fund.
Served as the governing body and determined financial allocations for joint programme components.
Funds were routed by way of a pass-through mechanism. Participating Organizations received funds through the Administrative Agent, Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) Office. The Administrative Agent was responsible for the receipt, administration and management of contributions from donors, disbursement of funds to Participating Organizations, and consolidation and dissemination of progress reports to donors.
Implementation of interventions was the responsibility of Participating Organizations. Each organization was programmatically and financially responsible for resources received.
